MIT Academic Calendar 2022-2023: Important Dates and Deadlines

Check out the MIT Academic Calendar 2022-2023 for important dates and due dates. It has dates for fall break, spring break, registration, the last day to add or drop classes, the first day of classes, and more.

The academic year at MIT runs on a 4–1–4 schedule. The fall semester starts after Labor Day and ends in the middle of December. In January, there is a 4-week “Independent Activities Period,” and the spring semester starts in early February and ends in late May.

Thursday, June 16, 2022, is the last day to sign up for Fall 2022. Students who want to keep taking classes must pre-register online by this date ($85 late fee after August 25). It is also the last day for continuing students to choose which CI-H/HW classes they want to take in the fall.
On the MIT academic calendar, doctoral students have until Friday, July 15, 2022, to send signed applications to the Office of Graduate Education for fall term non-resident status. These applications must be signed by their advisor and department.
On Monday, August 8, 2022, people on the Fall 2022 Housing Waitlist will get offers.
Friday, August 19, 2022, and Saturday, August 20, 2022, are the days for first-year international students to move in.
The day that people in the First-Year Pre-Orientation Program (FPOP) move in is Tuesday, August 23, 2022.
Continuing students have until 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 25, 2022, to pre-register. After this date, they will have to pay an extra $85 fee.
MIT On Saturday, August 27, 2022, and Sunday, August 28, 2022, first-year students can move in (by noon on Sunday).
Orientation for first-year students starts on Sunday, August 28, 2022. On this day, activities for new graduate students also start.
The MIT academic calendar says that all students can sign up to attend on Monday, August 29, 2022.
On Friday, September 3, 2022, at 8 a.m., first-year students can sign up for Physical Education and Wellness classes for the first quarter.
On September 3, 2022, sophomores, juniors, and seniors who live on campus will be able to move in.
Monday, September 5, 2022, is Labor Day.
Tuesday, September 6, 2022, is MIT’s Fall Registration Day.
On Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at 8 a.m., the first quarter of Physical Education and Wellness classes for graduates can be signed up for.
Wednesday, September 7, 2022, is the first day of fall classes at MIT.
Friday, September 9, 2022, is the last day to sign up for fall classes. By this date, all students must have sent in their registration forms. After this date, a $50 late fee will be added.
Juniors in their second term have until Friday, September 9, 2022, to turn in the HASS Concentration Proposal Form. The MIT academic calendar for 2022-2023 says that there will be a $50 late fee after this date.
Seniors in their last term have until Friday, September 9, 2022, to turn in the HASS Concentration Completion Form. After this date, you’ll be charged $50.
Monday, September 12, 2022, is the first day of classes for the first quarter of Physical Education and Wellness.
The last day to add half-term classes offered in the first half of term is September 16, 2022. (H1).
Seniors and graduate students have until Friday, September 16, 2022, to change H1 classes to or from P/D/F grading.
Friday, September 16, 2022, is the last day to change an H1 subject from listener to credit.
From Monday, September 19, 2022, to Friday, September 23, 2022, MIT Career Week takes place.
Friday, September 23, 2022, is a holiday for MIT students.
The date for the minor finish is Friday, September 23, 2022. Final-term seniors have until this date to turn in their Minor Completion Forms. The MIT academic calendar says that there will be a $50 late fee after this date.
On Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at 8 a.m., undergraduates can sign up for Physical Education and Wellness classes for the second quarter.
Friday, October 7, 2022 is the date to add. Today is the last day to sign up for full-term subjects.
Seniors and graduate students have until Friday, October 7, 2022, to change a full-term elective to or from P/D/F grading.
On the MIT academic calendar, the last day to change a full-term subject from listener to credit is Friday, October 7, 2022.
Friday, October 7, 2022, is the last day to drop half-term classes offered in the first half of term (H1).
On the MIT academic calendar, the last day to change an H1 subject from credit to listener is Friday, October 7, 2022.
Students who register after Friday, October 7, 2022, must pay a $100 late fee and fill out a petition.
May and September 2023 degree candidates have until Friday, October 7, 2022, to apply for a double major.
Cross-registration needs to be done by Friday, October 7, 2022. For petitions sent after this date, there is a $50 late fee.
Monday, October 10, 2022, is Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
The MIT academic calendar says that the MIT Student holiday is on Tuesday, October 11, 2022.
On Wednesday, October 12, 2022, at 8 a.m., the second quarter of Physical Education and Wellness classes for graduates can be signed up for.
From Monday, October 17, 2022, to Friday, October 21, 2022, (H1) is the last week of exams for half-term subjects.
Half-term classes offered in the first half of term will end on Friday, October 21, 2022. (H1).
Monday, October 24, 2022, is the first day of classes for the second half of term classes (H2).
The MIT academic calendar says that the second quarter of Physical Education and Wellness classes will start on Monday, October 31, 2022.
Friday, November 4, 2022, is the last day to sign up for second half-term classes (H2).
Seniors and graduate students have until November 4, 2022, to switch their H2 classes to or from P/D/F grading.
Friday, November 4, 2022, is the last day to change an H2 subject from listener to credit.
Friday, November 11, 2022, is Veterans Day.
The date for dropping is November 23, 2022. It is the last day to cancel registration for full-term subjects.
The last day to change a full-term subject from credit to listener is Wednesday, November 23, 2022.
The last day to add a timed subject that started after the start of the term is Wednesday, November 23, 2022.
Wednesday, November 23, 2022, is the last day to ask for the December Advanced Standing Exam, which is given during final exam time.
Thursday, November 24, 2022, is Thanksgiving Day.
Friday, November 25, 2022, is a holiday for Institute.
The last day to drop half-term classes offered in the second half of term is Wednesday, November 30, 2022. (H2).
Wednesday, November 30, 2022, is the last day to change an H2 subject from credit to listener.
According to the MIT academic calendar, the last test for subjects is on Friday, December 9, 2022.
Undergraduate subjects with no final exam are due on Friday, December 9, 2022.
The last day of school for fall 2022 is Wednesday, December 14, 2022.
From Friday, December 16, 2022, to Thursday, December 22, 2022, is the time for MIT’s fall 2022 final exams.
Wednesday, January 11, 2023, is the due date for grades. Subjects with final exams need to have grades turned in.
On Thursday, January 12, 2023, departments will be able to look at term summaries of fall term grades.

Tuesday, November 15, 2022, is the last day for doctoral students to get spring term non-resident status by sending a signed application to the Office of Graduate Education. The application must be signed by the student’s advisor and department. Not needed if the spring term was approved when you applied for the fall term.
On Thursday, December 1, 2022, you can start pre-registering for spring term 2023 and IAP.
Monday, January 9, 2023, is the last day to pre-register for Spring 2023. Students who want to keep going to school must pre-register by 5 p.m. on this date ($85 late fee after January 19).
January Independent Activities Period starts on Monday, January 9, 2023.
Monday, January 9, 2023, is the first day of IAP Physical Education and Wellness classes.
Monday, January 9, 2023, is the last day to pre-register for IAP. According to the MIT academic calendar, all students must sign up for IAP before 5 p.m.
Monday, January 16, 2023, is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
The last day for continuing students to pre-register for spring 2023 is Thursday, January 19, 2023, at 5 p.m. $85 fee for being late after this date. It is also the last day that continuing students can choose their spring CI-H/CI-HW subject preferences.
On Monday, January 30, 2023, Registration Week for the Spring term 2023 starts.
Friday, February 3, 2023, is the last day of Registration Week for the Spring term. The MIT academic calendar says that third-quarter Physical Education and Wellness classes for undergraduates can be signed up for at 8 AM.
January Independent Activities Period ends on Friday, February 3, 2023.
On Monday, February 6, 2023, Spring classes at MIT start.
At 8 a.m. on Tuesday, February 1, 2023, graduate students can sign up for Physical Education and Wellness classes for the third quarter.
The last day to sign up for spring is Friday, February 10, 2023. By this date, all students must have sent in their registration forms. After this date, you’ll be charged $50.
Friday, February 10, 2023, is the last day to apply for a May SB or advanced degree. After this date, there is a $50 late fee and a $85 late fee after April 1.
Juniors in their second term have until Friday, February 10, 2023, to turn in the HASS Concentration Proposal Form. After this date, you’ll be charged $50.
Seniors in their last term have until Friday, February 10, 2023, to turn in the HASS Concentration Completion Form. After this date, you’ll be charged $50.
On Monday, February 13, 2023, classes for the third quarter of Physical Education and Wellness start.

- Last day to add half-term subjects offered in first half of term (H3).
- Last day for juniors, seniors, and graduate students to change H3 subjects to or from P/D/F grading.
- Last day to change H3 subjects from listener to credit.
Presidents’ Day is on Monday, February 20, 2023.
The date for the minor finish is Friday, February 24, 2023. Final-term seniors have until this date to turn in their Minor Completion Forms. After this date, you’ll be charged $50.
At 8 a.m. on March 1, 2023, students in their first year can sign up for Physical Education and Wellness classes for the fourth quarter.
On Tuesday, March 7, 2023, at 8 a.m., grad students can sign up for Physical Education and Wellness classes for the fourth quarter.
The Add Date is March 10, 2023. The last day to sign up for full-term subjects.
According to the MIT academic calendar, Friday, March 10 2023 is the;
- Last day for juniors, seniors, and graduate students to change a full-term elective to or from P/D/F grading.
- Last day to switch a full-term subject from listener to credit.
- Last day to drop half-term classes in the first half of the term (H3).
- Last day to switch an H3 subject from credit to listener.
- Students who register after this date must pay a $100 late fee and fill out a petition.
- Last day to apply for a double major if you want to graduate in February 2024.
- Cross-registration must be done by the deadline. For petitions sent after this date, there is a $50 late fee.
- Students who are eligible for the Flexible P/NR grading option and want to make a change for Fall 2022 and are graded P/NR have until this date.
At 8 a.m. on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, graduates can sign up for Physical Education and Wellness classes for the fourth quarter.
The last exam period (H3) for the half-term subjects is from Monday, March 20, 2023, to Friday, March 24, 2023.
The last day of classes for half-term classes offered in the first half of term is March 24, 2023. (H3).
MIT From Monday, March 27, 2023, to Friday, March 31, 2023, is Spring Break.
Monday, April 3, 2023, is the first day of classes for the second half of term classes (H4).
The MIT academic calendar says that Physical Education and Wellness classes for the fourth quarter will start on Wednesday, April 5, 2023.
Campus Preview Weekend runs from Thursday, April 13, 2023, to Sunday, April 16, 2023.
Friday, April 8, 2022, is the last day to sign up for second half-term classes (H4). The last day for juniors, seniors, and graduate students to switch H4 classes from listener to credit or from P/D/F grading to or from P/D/F grading, and the last day to switch H4 classes from listener to P/D/F grading.
Patriots’ Day is on Monday, April 17, 2023.
Drop Date is Tuesday, April 25, 2023. It is the last day to cancel registration for full-term subjects.
Tuesday, April 25 2023 is the;
- Last day to change a full-term subject from credit to listener.
- Last day to add a time-arranged subject that started after beginning of the term.
- Last day to petition for May Advanced Standing Exam (given during final exam period).
Tuesday, May 2, 2023, is the last day to drop second half of term half-term classes (H4). On the MIT academic calendar, this is also the last day to change an H4 subject from credit to listener.
For a doctorate, the thesis is due on Friday, May 5, 2023.
The date of the last exam for subjects is May 12, 2023. After this date, no tests can be given and no work can be due.
The day for subjects with no final exam is May 12, 2023. — For undergraduate classes, there can’t be a test and there can only be one assignment due between now and the end of the last class period.
Tuesday, May 16, 2023, is the last day of classes for the Spring semester.
From Friday, May 19, 2023, to Wednesday, May 24, 2023, the final exams for Spring 2023 will be given.
The deadline for Grade is Friday, May 26, 2023. Final exams are due at noon, and grades are due at the same time. Departments can look at term summaries of grades from the spring term.
Memorial Day is on Monday, May 29, 2023.
Commencement activities will take place on June 1 and 2, 2023.
