Hungary Government Scholarship Coverage
The following advantages are offered to recipients of Hungary Government Scholarships:
- Tuition-free education
- Exemption from the payment of tuition fee
- Monthly stipend
- Contribution to living expenses in Hungary for 12 months every year, till the end of studies, in the amount of HUF 43,700 (about EUR 130).
- Doctoral level: Every current Hungarian law, the monthly scholarship amount is HUF 140 000 (cca EUR 450) for the first phase of education (4 semesters) and HUF 180 000 (cca EUR 580) for the second phase (4 semesters) – for 12 months per year, till the end of studies. Please refer to section 1.2.1 for information.
- Accommodation contribution
- For the whole duration of the scholarship period, a free room in a dorm or a donation of HUF 40 000 per month toward housing costs is required.
- Please be aware that the HUF 40 000/month is a payment to the rental expenses if the student does not live in the dormitory, and that in larger cities, particularly the capital city, this contribution would not cover the full amount of rental charges.
- Medical insurance
- Health care services in accordance with applicable Hungarian law (Act No. 80 of 1997, national health insurance card), as well as additional medical insurance for up to HUF 65 000 (about EUR 205) per person per year.
Eligibility Criteria for Hungary Government Scholarship
Candidates must meet all of the requirements listed below in order to be eligible for Hungarian Government Scholarships:
- Required Language: English. English language proficiency (for courses taught in English).
- Excellent school achievements.
- Good health.
- Eligible Sending Partners: The Hungary Government Scholarship is founded on successful bilateral agreements for educational cooperation between Hungary’s Ministry of Human Capabilities and the partner country’s Ministry in charge of higher education. Applications shall be regarded as being eligible if the applicant has been nominated by the Sending Partner’s competent authorities. Required Documents for Hungary Government Scholarship
- Online Application Form
- The applicants must complete the online application form in English and save all required information.
- A current picture of the candidate (taken not earlier than 2 years before the submission of the application)
- The length of the studies (one or two semesters) and the commencement date (September or February) must be specified clearly in the application for partial (exchange) studies.
- Motivation Letter:
- A minimum of 1 page must be typed in Times New Roman 12 point letters.
- Language competency certifications and their translations into the study program’s chosen language or into Hungarian
- Scanned copies of the original documents demonstrating language competency, with translations AND a minimum standard set by the host institution
- If the applicant has completed prior levels of education in the chosen study program’s language, documentation demonstrating that the applicant’s language of education matches the study program’s language can be uploaded.
- School transcripts and their translations into the study program’s language of choice or into Hungarian
- Bachelor level full-time programs: The translations of the original secondary school graduation certificate and a scanned copy of it
- Master-level full-time programs: A scan of the original bachelor’s degree certificate or its equivalent, along with any necessary translations
- One-tier master level full-time programs: The translations of the original secondary school graduation certificate and a scanned copy of it
- Doctoral level: The actual master’s degree certificate or its equivalent, in scanned form, AND their translations
- Non-Degree, Hungarian language preparatory programs: A translated version of the secondary school diploma as well as a scan of it

- Medical Certificate
- Scanned copy of a health certificate stating that you are in good health, issued no earlier than November 15, 2021
- To demonstrate that the applicant is healthy and does not have the following conditions, certificates must be issued and signed by a doctor: Hepatitis A, B, C, HIV, or any other pandemic diseases
- Copy of Identification Document
- If the applicant possesses a passport already, the scan of the document should be uploaded.
- The applicant should provide a scanned copy of any document that can be used to prove the applicant’s identification if they do not yet hold a passport (e.g. national ID card)
- Acceptance of the Application Statement using the online system
- The “Statement for Application” must be agreed upon by all applicants.
- Because the statement can only be submitted online, scanned and signed copies shouldn’t be posted.
- All applicants must click on accepting the statement after registering in the online application system in order to submit their applications.
- All documents that are unavailable in the study program’s chosen language or in Hungarian must be translated, and both the translations and a copy of the original document must be submitted.

How to Apply for Hungary Government Scholarship?
In order to apply for this scholarship, please follow the steps below:
1. Find the program of your choice.
The study areas that are available vary from partner country to partner country. You can either start an application through the DreamApply system and choose the appropriate study program, or you can check the study fields offered for your nation at the SH website. Here you can find a list of sending partners and approved study fields.
2. Contact your sending partner
Applications must also be sent to the sending partner’s competent authorities. It’s possible that the requirements and timeframes for submitting the application materials will vary depending on the sending partner. To find out the specific steps they take, get in touch with your sending partner (this could be the local Hungarian Embassy, the relevant government, council, etc.).
3. Register and upload your documents
An online application system is used to process applications (apply.stipendiumhungaricum.hu). There are more than 600 academic programs available at 29 universities and colleges, but just two options are permitted. Ensure that the programs you choose are pertinent to the subject area of your studies. Please keep in mind that you must identify a supervisor if you choose to pursue PhD studies. Depending on your country of origin and academic level, other documents can be needed. These criteria are listed in the section below titled “Documents.”
4. Application deadline
You have till the deadline to submit your application. Before submitting your application, please make sure that all necessary documents are attached and all needed fields are correctly filled out. Please see the top for the application deadline!
5. Sending partner’s nomination list
By the end of February, sending partners will nominate the top candidates, and those applications will be sent to the selected Hungarian higher education institutions.
6. Entrance exam at Hungarian Universities
To schedule a time and perform the entrance tests from the middle of March to the end of May, the universities will contact the suggested candidates directly. For your application to be taken into consideration for the final list of scholarship grantees, your exam scores must be at least 56 out of a possible 100.
