Brief description:
The Humphrey Fellowship Program is for experienced professionals who want to improve their leadership skills by learning more about issues that affect both the U.S. and the Fellows’ home countries.
Institution(s) hosting:
Fellows are sent to one of the US universities that are taking part. Fellows don’t get to choose which college they’ll go to. Instead, they are put into different groups of 7–15 and sent to the best host institution based on their interests and fields of work.

As a program that doesn’t lead to a degree, the Fellowship is a great way to improve your career by taking certain classes at a university, going to conferences, making connections, and doing real work. The program fields that can be used are:

- Communications/Journalism
- Economic Development
- Educational Administration, Planning and Policy
- Finance and Banking
- Higher Education Administration
- HIV/AIDS Policy and Prevention
- Human Resource Management
- Law and Human Rights
- Natural Resources, Environmental Policy, and Climate Change
- Public Health Policy and Management
- Public Policy Analysis and Public Administration
- Substance Abuse Education, Treatment and Prevention
- Teaching of English as a Foreign Language
- Technology Policy and Management
- Trafficking in Persons Policy and Prevention
- Urban and Regional Planning
Number of Awards:
Every year, about 200 Fellowships are given out.
Target group:
Citizens of eligible countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, Europe and Eurasia, Middle East and North Africa, East Asia and Pacific, South and Central Asia, and Western Hemisphere.
Scholarship value/inclusions:
The Fellowship takes care of:
• Paying tuition and fees at the university that was chosen as the host;
• English language training before college, if needed;
• A living allowance, which includes a one-time settling-in allowance;
• Coverage for accidents and illnesses;
• A book stipend;
• A one-time grant for computers;
• Air travel to and from the U.S. for the program and travel within the U.S. to attend required program events;
• A Professional Development allowance for things like field trips, professional visits, and conferences that are related to work.
Eligibility:
The person applying must:
• An undergraduate (first university) degree,
• At least five years of full-time work experience in the field
• Little or no experience in the U.S. before,
• Showed signs of being a leader,
• A history of helping the community, and
• English language ability

Application instructions:
The deadlines for applications vary by country, but they are usually between May and September each year. The U.S. Embassy or Binational Fulbright Commission that nominated you will tell you when the deadline for applications is. By October 1, embassies and commissions must send their nominations to the office of the Institute of International Education in Washington, DC.
