Howard University has been around since 1867. It is a private research university with 13 schools and colleges.
Students study in more than 140 fields that lead to bachelor’s, master’s, and professional degrees. To date, Howard has given out more than 120,000 degrees in the arts, sciences, and humanities. It also has more African-American Ph.D. recipients on campus than any other U.S. university. The historic main campus is on a hilltop in Northwest Washington, just a few blocks from the famous U Street and Howard Theatre. We are two miles from the U.S. Capitol, where a lot of students do internships and where a lot of our alumni make decisions about national and international policy.
Howard is one of the best in the STEM fields. The National Science Foundation says that Howard has the most African-American undergraduates who go on to get doctoral degrees in science or engineering. The University also has programs in social work, business, and communications that are among the best in the country. So far, we have had one Schwarzman Scholar, three Marshall Scholars, four Rhodes Scholars, 12 Truman Scholars, 25 Pickering Fellows, and more than 165 Fulbright recipients.
The College of Medicine is known around the world for its long history of training students to become skilled, caring doctors who work in medically underserved areas at home and around the world. The College is one of the best places in the United States to train women to be surgeons and one of the best places in the country to study health disparities among people of color. The Howard University Hospital, the Colleges of Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Allied Health Sciences are all part of the Howard University Health Sciences division.
The Howard University School of Law has been a supporter of social justice and a builder of social change for more than 150 years. It has turned out more than 4,000 social engineers, including the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, well-known lawmakers, civil rights lawyers, mayors, and public officials from all over the United States. According to a preLaw magazine, it is the best law school for African Americans.
Truth and Service, which is the motto of the University, is an important part of who we are. More than 10,000 undergrads and grads give hundreds of hours of service each year in LeDroit Park, across the country, and around the world. Over the 50-year history of the U.S. Peace Corps, more than 200 Howard graduates have worked as volunteers all over the world. This is the most of any historically-Black college.
The University still wants to improve its strategic positioning as one of the best research universities in the country. As we celebrate 154 years, we are in a great place to make the next 150 years just as great as the last 154.
Howard University Hospital
The Howard University Hospital is one of the best hospitals in the United States. Howard University Hospital (HUH) has a long history of good leadership and service that goes back to 1862. It was first called Freedmen’s Hospital and was in a building that used to be an army barracks. It was a safe place for former slaves to get the medical care they couldn’t get anywhere else.
At the end of the 1860s, Freedmen’s and the Howard University College of Medicine joined forces to train African-American doctors. Together, the medical school and the hospital have helped many of the best African-American doctors in the country get their start.
Over its 145-year history of providing the best primary, secondary, and tertiary health care services, Howard University Hospital has become one of the most complete health care facilities in the Washington, D.C. area and has been named a DC Level 1 Trauma Center.
HUH is the only teaching hospital in the country that is on the campus of a historically Black university. It is a private, non-profit institution. It gives medical students a great place to learn and a chance to watch or join professionals who are changing the way health care is done in groundbreaking clinical and research work. Magazines like Washingtonian and Black Enterprise have said that doctors who work at the hospital are leaders in a wide range of specialties.

Howard University Library
In 1929, the government gave Howard University more than a million dollars to build a new library. On January 3, 1939, people could start using the building. It was named The Founders Library to honor the 17 men who started Howard University and were given the charter for the school.
When it was finished, it got a lot of attention across the country. In 1939, when the library was officially opened, Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes made a strong statement:
“A library is more than a building, and the books on its shelves are more than just books.”
Today, the Howard University Libraries are more than just the books on their shelves. They are a central library system made up of Founders, three additional branches in the schools of Business, Divinity, and Social Work, and the well-known Moorland Spingarn Research Center. All of our libraries and centers are there to help Howard University’s curriculum and educational goals. They have an amazing collection of more than three-quarters of a million book and journal titles, electronic and multimedia resources, and more than two hundred online databases on topics like African Studies, Life Sciences, Theatre Arts, and World Languages.
The Howard University library system is proud of the many educational classes it offers and the wide range of resources it makes available to help students, faculty, and the general public learn and do research. Our staff is committed to giving every customer the best service possible.
Founders Library is home to the Moorland Spingarn Research Center collection, the University Archives, and the University Museum. What started as a small collection of anti-slavery books and pamphlets in Howard University’s early years is now one of the best places in the world to study the Black experience. It has opened the door to new research and let scholars dig deeper into the complicated history and culture of Black people.
So, please use the books and computers that the Howard University Libraries have available. We hope you enjoy your time with us, whether you talk to us on chat, Twitter, Facebook, email, our website, or in person at the library.
How can we help you? Please tell us.

Howard University Address
Howard University Law School
Welcome to the law school at Howard University. New and current students should check this website often because it will be used to share news and events, highlight our faculty, students, and alumni, offer ways to give, and, most importantly, get in touch with you about announcements, helpful advice, scheduling, law school requirements, and more.
Students, professors, alumni, and staff at Howard University School of Law are living in an exciting time. Our Law Library continues to be the best place to do research and learn. All of our classrooms have also been remodeled and smart-wired so that they can use new information technologies. Also, each member of the faculty has a website, which improves the learning experience by making it easier for students and teachers to talk to each other outside of class. This law school uses technology in almost every way to keep up its tradition of giving “leadership for America and the world community.”
We just finished fixing up the entrance to Charles Hamilton Houston Hall, where many classrooms and administrative offices are located. We keep making improvements to our facilities and are very proud of how beautiful and peaceful the campus is.
Some things here will always be the same. The Howard University School of Law’s faculty, staff, and administration are still as dedicated as ever to giving their students the best legal education possible and preparing the next generation of leaders. We have a very talented faculty and student body, led by a visionary dean, and thousands of graduates who are already making big changes in the legal field and their communities all over the country. We hope you will visit us often, both through this website and in person when you can.
Thank you for coming to the Howard University School of Law and welcome!

Reasons for Howard Students being unable to log in
Authentication Failed – Invalid Password (The user name or password is incorrect.)
Students will have to try to log in again, as it was probably a bad combination of username and password. If this doesn’t work, the student will need to reset their password at Howard Portal before trying again. Tell the student that there are times when the username and password get separated on the University side and there is nothing OAS can do about it. The only choice is to go to Howard Portal and change the password.
Temporary Access has expired
The student had temporary access to SAMM, but that time has now run out. The Accessibility Specialist will have to look at the student’s account and remove the “Access Expires On:” date from the Student Profile.
Fail attempt more than 5 times.
The student has tried to log in 5 times but hasn’t been able to. Because of this, their account has been locked. The steps above are what a staff member needs to do to get into their account.
Username and password combination is wrong. Browser: XXXXXXX
The student can’t get into their account because they are using the wrong username or password. The students must try again. If they still can’t log in, they’ll need to reset their password at Howard Portal before trying again.

Troubleshooting Howard student login issues
The Howard Portal doesn’t have a login button on their site
Owners of Howard Portal can change everything about their site, including the login button. If the site owner has taken down the login button, please contact them directly to find out how to get into their login portal.
I logged in to the Howard Portal. Why don’t I see all of the products I’m enrolled in?
You might make more than one account at the same Portal by accident by using different email addresses. This could happen if, when you bought the product, you misspelled your email address. If you can log in, but you can’t find or get to your course, you may have more than one account in the Howard Portal.
You can only get to your products by logging into the account you used to buy them or sign up for them, so make sure you’re logging into the right account. If you don’t know if you’ve made more than one account.
I don’t remember my Howard password; what should I do?
You might be having trouble logging in because the password for your student account is old or doesn’t work. If this is the case, you might want to change your password completely.
I used the wrong email address/no longer have access to my email address.
If you signed up with the wrong email address, don’t have access to the original email address anymore, or think you may have misspelled your email address, contact the Howard Portal owner first to ask for help signing up with a different email address.
If you’ve tried to get in touch with the owner and haven’t heard back, contact our Customer Support team.
