- The doctoral fellowship has a 12-month academic year value of $19,000. The Award is re-renewed based on an annual appraisal of progress (scholarship-class standing required). Awarded students may keep their awards for up to 36 months of full-time education.
- Fees must be paid out of the award because they are not waived.
- Each year, a new prize is given out.
- The James Robinson Johnston Graduate Entrance Scholarship for African Canadians will be given as a “top-up award” to any other scholarships that a candidate holds, up to a maximum of $20,000 for master’s degrees and $30,000 for doctoral degrees per academic year, both internal and external to Dalhousie University.

How to Apply for Dalhousie University Scholarships?
To apply for scholarships at Dalhousie University, please follow the instructions below.
(1) Sign up for an account on the FGS Scholarship Management Platform. Please choose “Use Dalhousie NetID” to log in if you already have a Dalhousie NetID. If not, kindly establish a password and input your email address. Even if you want to apply for several job openings, you only need to set up one account.
(2) From the “My applications” section on your home page, choose to create a new scholarship application or amend an existing one. Please do not submit more than one Harmonized Scholarship application as each applicant will only be permitted to submit one application each competition.
(3) Candidates for the Master’s degree who have submitted an application to the Tri-Agency CGS-M competition may elect to use their CGS-M application during the Harmonized Scholarship Process. Please proceed through the application by selecting “Master’s Level – CGS-M Opt-In” as the submission category. Your reference letters and transcripts that you submit for the Tri-Agency CGSM competition will be linked to your opt-in form by the Faculty of Graduate Studies along with your CGS-M application. Opt-in is required by December 1st (coinciding with the CGS-M application deadline set by Tri-Agency). To be eligible for other scholarships, you must submit a full Harmonized Scholarship Application if you did not opt-in with your CGS-M application.
(4) The self-identification questionnaire that may be accessed in the online scholarship platform is encouraged to be filled out by all applicants. Administrators can then make sure candidates are placed in the review process for awards that have particular eligibility requirements. The answers you provide in this questionnaire are not accessible to the reviewers and will be kept completely private.
(5) To proceed through the application, click “Next” at the bottom of each page. The applicant can close the application and come back to it later to change or update it by selecting “Save.”
(6) In accordance with the instructions in the application, the candidate is required to collect official transcripts and upload them directly in the scholarship portal. Copies of transcripts from admissions applications will not be given by FGS. Before submitting, transcripts from various universities must be consolidated into a single PDF. For the harmonised scholarship application procedure, unofficial grade reports rather than official transcripts may be used by current Dalhousie students.
(7) By the deadline of January 15, 2022, all reference letters must be presented on the portal (or February 15 in the case of non-thesis applicants). After this date, the application portal will be closed to candidates and references, and incomplete applications won’t be sent for consideration. Reference letters cannot be submitted electronically or printed out. In the event of unforeseen circumstances or technological difficulties, it is strongly advised that candidates give their references notice of a deadline a few days to one week prior to January 14. As soon as a referee’s reference is finished, a “received” notation will appear by each referee’s name in red and an email notification will be sent to the applicant through the site. Prior to the deadline, kindly check the status of references regularly.
(8) To finish and submit the application, agree to the terms and conditions and click “Save and Finalize.”
Note: Up until the January 15 deadline, you may withdraw your application to make adjustments, such as revising your transcripts with your autumn grades or making revisions in response to departmental criticism. If you withdraw your application, you must resubmit it by the deadline of January 15 in order to be taken into consideration.
