International students may apply for Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarships to pursue their master’s degrees at any highly regarded institution, with the exception of those in the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Denmark, The Netherlands, Italy, Norway, and Ireland.

In order to foster effective scholars and leaders and to prepare them for employment, primarily within the AKDN, the Aga Khan Foundation awards a small number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from particular developing countries who have no other means of funding their studies. Once a year in June or July, after a competitive application process, scholarships are given out on a 50/50 grant/loan basis.

The Foundation prioritises requests for master’s level courses but is open to considering applications for PhD programmes only in the event of exceptional students who are strongly encouraged by their lecturers to pursue doctoral studies and who need a PhD to achieve their career goals (academic or research oriented).

Applications for short-term courses or from students who have already begun their course of study are not taken into consideration.

Scholarship Coverage

The following advantages are offered to recipients of international scholarships from the Aga Khan Foundation:

The Foundation solely helps students with living expenses and tuition.
Only the first two years of a PhD programme are financially supported; following that, students are obliged to find other means of support.
The amount of financial aid given depends on the needs of the students.
To keep the amount asked from the Foundation to a minimum, applicants are urged to make every attempt to secure support from additional sources as well.
Those who have managed to obtain some support from alternative sources are given preference.

Loan Conditions

Half of the scholarship is treated as a loan that must be repaid with a 5 percent annual service fee. The loan contract must be co-signed by a guarantor. Six months after the Aga Khan Foundation-funded study period ends, a five-year payback term begins.

Applications are accepted in France, Portugal, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Canada from those who are natives of one of the aforementioned developing nations, are interested in studies connected to development, and have no other means of financing their study.

How to Apply for Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarships?

To apply for an international scholarship from the Aga Khan Foundation, please follow the requirements below:

A scholarship to attend the selected university should be on the table.
Obtain application form from AKF offices or Aga Khan Education Services / Boards in the country of your current residence.
Send the application that has been completed to the organisation that provided it. They must not be transported to Geneva.
